The Importance of Going Green

September 21st, 2015 Posted by The Shop No Comment yet

We LOVE this planet and we love Mother Nature, so here at The Attic we are committed to providing our clients with the best services all whilst being as eco friendly as possible. The hair care industry is definitely not synonymous with being kind to this planet, however we think that it should be and we are willing to fight for change.

As soon as we opened last July we made it our priority to become a Green Circle Salon. They stand for sustainability, transparency and accountability; ensuring always that their business dealings are ethical and honest. Through Green Circle we are able to say that we recycle 90% of all products used in our Studio, everything from excess hair colour to the canisters they are stored in to your actual hair, so you can leave our studio feeling great about your hair and the environment.

At the Attic we are also a Goldwell/KMS California exclusive salon because we love what they stand for: “Enriching lives, in harmony with nature.”So many of our hair care products are vegan, paraben and sulfate free , which means they’re good on your skin and gentle on our planet too! You can also be sure that none of the products created by Goldwell and KMS were tested on animals.

Below is a photo of all of the extra colour we saved from going down the drain over the course of a few weeks in the studio. Green Circle takes the chemicals and are able to break them down so that they can be disposed of in a non-toxic or harmful way!

Even with all of our advancements in technology these days disasters can still happen and all we do is try our best to minimize the impact on our environment. Green Circle recycles all of our cut hair and re-purposes it into hair booms that can be used to soak up oil from oil spills.  Not only did they play a major roll in providing relief during the big BP oil spill back in 2010, but more recently here in Vancouver, our recycled hair helped to clean up after a tanker spilled oil into English Bay. Being a part of a company that cares so much about this planet is as important to us as providing our clients with the best hair care and newest styles!

We hope to be able to make more aspects of our salon eco-friendly in the near future so stay tuned for updates <3

“It’s not only about looking good and feeling good- it’s about doing good!”

Education at The Attic

September 2nd, 2015 Posted by SHOP TALK No Comment yet

At The Attic we believe that the best stylist is the one who never stops learning. Whether its a new technique, trend or product, we are always ready and willing to test it out. Being able to provide our clients with the most up to date styles is so important, especially in this trend orientated city.

We are lucky enough to have 3 Goldwell educators call this studio home and they can be often be sent as far a field as Toronto to teach. Being a part of the Kao Canada family means that education is at our fingertips, and so when asked if we would host a class being taught by the amazing Derrick Zeno for 16 stylists from around the Lower Mainland, we jumped at the chance!

After spending the night transforming The Attic into a classroom we opened our doors to some smiling and eager stylists early Sunday morning. Armed with scissors, brushes, bowls and an excessive amount of hair spray the Extreme Colour Camp got underway.

Sometimes its easy for stylists to fall into the routine of using colour straight from a tube. We believe, however, that each client should get a colour as unique as they are and so learning to mix and create different tones is paramount. Whether you learned to colour 2 years ago or 20, sometimes going back to basics can help to refresh and re-inspire a stylist.

Over the course of two days, stylists who attended the class were asked to experiment with mixing colours, new application techniques and try their hand at colour corrections (that are all too common unfortunately!). The integrity of your hair should always be your¬†stylists number one priority, as a client you have the right to question the products used in your hair and understand what services are being performed. Most importantly: don’t ever be afraid to talk to your stylist!

The Attic will host a number of other classes heading up to Christmas so stay tuned for the full list!
